Steve McQueen
I work with apprentices so the average age is 17 - 23, they have not heard of Steve McQueen.
I mentioned him the other day and they had no idea, to cap it they said 'Oh yeh was he in CARS....................'

I can''t let it go

I told my (Australian) daughter that I was working with Boy George about ten years ago and she had absolutely no idea who I was talking about.

Re: Steve McQueen
Unbelievable, isn't it.

I was talking to my kids about my favourite Will Hay films the other day, and it was like a tumbleweed had just rolled through the room.

With the invention of the internet many imagined people of curiosity would have access to all sorts of knowledge & cultural history.

THAT HAPPENED BEFORE I WAS BORN is often the response of those of a generation whose major cultural reference is having the Kardashian family tree committed to memory.

It's almost like (western) humanity is striving to put itself back to an age where "God knows these things..." is a perfectly acceptable answer to the unknown and mere mortals should worry themselves no more on the matter.

Substitute "The internet" or "MY Phone" for "God" and the difference is not that great.

Re: Steve McQueen
Consider this: we are talking about people born 1990-2000

And WHO seems to be a lot of people born 1960-1970.

Are there big actors that died in 1930 and were really popular in 1910s that you don't know about.

(Steve McQueen died in 80' and was most popular in 60s)

Probably, so maybe a little harsh.

People born in the UK from 1950 - 1969 only had 3 TV channels to choose from and single screen local flea-pits of Cinemas. Choice of radio stations was similarly restricted. Those TV stations only broadcast for part of the day, too.

With such limited access to media content it's hardly surprising only a handful of pre-war "stars" gained popular recognition.

Re: Steve McQueen
ridiculous asking if people knew the biggest stars of 1910, especially as very few films would be accessible even now, even on streaming sites. there's no excuse other than ignorance not even knowing the name, steve mcqueen

And the access to media that millennials have, as compared to me, who is slightly younger than most on here it seems,(I grew up with 3 channels in 80s and later a VCR, I lived in rural Canada remember) has jumped even more dramatically than difference you just pointed out.

Literally millions of things for their attention.

I disagree, I knew Steve McQueen because my mom was a fan. So I watched Great Escape and Magnificent Seven, very early on VHS because of it, but I would have no other reason to know him. I can ever remember them being on TV.

Re: Steve McQueen
I will give a latter example that I think is very similar to McQueen.

Dick Powell. I love Chandler and noir, so I found him through Murder My Sweet, based on a Chandler book.
But before that he was a song and dance ladies man, very popular, had a few radio shows etc.

Doubt many have heard of him and he only died in 1963 and was big in the 40s and 50s.

Re: Steve McQueen
A large amount of the younger generation are ignorant with anything historical.

Work with an intelligent girl who is 30 and who has never heard of bands like The Who.

Can maybe say its because their parents didnt get them into certain music and films, but the excuse of it being before they were born with most things historical is a lazy one.

I have mates who are 40 who looked dumbfounded when I was talking about Roy Orbison a few years ago. Literally none of them knew who he was. I was so angry I walked out of the pub.
